तपाईँहरु बिचमा अाफुलाई यहाँ पाँउदा आज म अत्यन्त गौरांभित छु। संसारकै राम्रा मध्य एक बिश्वबिधालयबाट तपाँई उतिर्ण हुदैँ हुनुहुन्छ। म आफू चाहिँ कलेज कहिल्यै सक्काउन सकिन।  सत्य! कलेज ग्रयाजुएसनको यति नजिक आएको यो मेरो पहिलो पटक हो।  

आज म तपाँईलाई मेरो जीवनको तीन वटा कथा सुनाउछुँ। मात्र यत्ति! कुनै ठुला ठुला कुराहरु होईन, मात्र तीन वटा कथा।

पहिलो कथा हो जीवनका थोप्लाहरु जोड्ने बारे ।

म रीड कलेजमा पढ्न थालेको ६ महिना भित्रै कलेज छोडेँ तर अर्को १८ महिना सम्म यत्तिकै त्यहाँ भित्रै हल्लिरहेँ जस पश्चात पुरै नै छोडेँ। प्रश्न रह्यो – मैले किन छोडे त?

यसको उत्तर म जन्मनु अगावै शुरु भएको थियो। मेरो जन्म दिने आमा एक कलिलो, अविवाहित कलेज पढेने  बिधार्थी थिईन त्यसैले उनले मलाई अरु कोहि अरुलाई नै गोध भर्न दिने निधो गरिन् । उनलाई म कलेजबाट उतिर्ण भएकाले नै पाल्नु पर्छ भन्ने थियो तसर्थ म पेटमा हुदैँ मलाई एक वकिल र उन्‌को श्रिमतीको हात सुम्पिने पक्का-पक्की भएको थियो।

टाइम  पत्रिकाले यसरी बर्षको अन्तिम संस्करणको पहिलो पृष्ठमा काठमाडौं उपत्यकालाई एशियाको “चम्किलो मोती” घोषणा गरि दिएकोमा विश्व जगतमा हलचल मच्चिएको छ। सन् २०१५ मा ७.८ रेक्टर स्केलको भुकम्पको चपेटामा परेको यो शहरले पछिल्लो १५ वर्षको अवधिमै कसरी यस्तो छलाङ्ग मार्यो – सबैलाई चाँसोको बिषय बनेको छ । काठमाडौं उपत्यकालाई सन् २०३०मा संसारको सबैभन्दा सुन्दर शहर चुन्नमा विश्व-विख्यात शहरी विकास योजनाविद् तथा अग्रज हरु सामेल निर्णायक मण्डलले १० विशेष कारण दिएका छन्।

Until when will we carry the tag of a ‘beggar’ nation in the world?

This question haunts all of us who believe in building a prosperous ‘Nepal’ within our lifetime. Looking back at our history of ‘begging’, in the last 60 years one can safely deduce that foreign aid has not delivered. Tragically, it has instilled in the mindset of Nepalis the culture of ‘begging’. Our fierce human wish to be self-sustained, dignified and entrepreneurial has been handicapped by this very culture of begging, exacerbated by decades of foreign aid (easy money). Today there remains only two options for a Nepali; either continue being addicted to foreign aid and keep begging for more, or take the detoxifying path to regain dignity and self reliance through entrepreneurship fostered by investments for Nepal.

Nepali society can never lift itself out of poverty if our leadership continues to embrace this culture of ‘abject’ begging. Our leadership’s attitude and the subsequent system it has built accepts donors as gods. This has created a extractive model of opaque (non-transparent), corrupt and unequal donor driven society. The government and non-governmental institutions engineered around foreign aid have in the last five decades remained largely unanswerable
